Dr. Donald Venes is an experienced journalist as well as a practicing physician. He's also the Taber's Medical Editor and therefore the ideal person to guide the many staff members of our Taber's team. When developing a new edition of Taber's, Dr. Donald Venes reviews all copy submitted-editing, rewriting, and writing as needed. This is Dr. Venes' second stint as the Taber's Editor, beginning with his work on the 19th edition.
With the publication of the new 20th edition of Taber's, we interviewed Dr. Venes to find out more about him and in the process discover why Taber's is the best nursing and health science dictionary available.
FAD - What inspired you to become involved in Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary?
DV - I was inspired to pursue a career with Taber's because of my lifelong love for health care, education, and the written word. I am a professionally trained journalist (Master of Science in Journalism, Northwestern University's Medill School) and a board certified diplomate in Internal Medicine. I have enjoyed two decades of medical practice, and have always tried to be a student of medicine as well as a skilled practitioner. The opportunity to edit Taber's has let me combine my professional interests. As the editor of Taber's, I have the opportunity to immerse myself in new developments in health care and to communicate my understanding of those developments to students, practitioners, and the general public.
FAD - What was your most rewarding experience in editing this book?
DV - I've had many rewarding experiences editing Taber's. I have the privilege of working with an extraordinarily competent and eager group of editors and consultants; and I have the thrill, nearly every day, of finding new terms for the text, and new updates for definitions that are already in it.
FAD - Why should educators and students use Taber's 20th Ed.? What does Taber's have that other health science dictionaries don't?
DV - Taber's uses a systematic approach to studying the literature of health care and summarizing it for our readers. Those of us who work on the text strive to include material for our readers that is significant, up-to-date, detailed, and thoroughly described. Nearly every time I work in my hospital duties, I overhear professional staff discussing the text; how crucial it has been to their education and their continuing professional development. The interest of our readers in Taber's style of conveying information is gratifying, and I believe, unique.
FAD - What motivates you?
DV - I set out each morning to make the text better and better--more inclusive; easier to read and understand; comprehensive; visually appealing; contemporary and forward looking.

FAD - What expression or rule of life do you try to live by?
DV - We get only one opportunity to live our lives. We should try to make the most of it; to work hard, to play joyfully, to enjoy each other, to be supportive of each other; to solve problems; to integrate what we have learned with what we do everyday and what we hope for the future.
