Denise Harmening, PhD, MT(ASCP), CLS(NCA)

The fifth edition of Modern Blood Banking & Transfusion Practices, 5th Edition was published last year and has been very well received. We recently interviewed Dr. Harmening to find out more about her writing process and discover what drives her success.

FAD - What inspired you to write your first book?

DH - Since I loved teaching blood banking, and my students said they really enjoyed my course, I decided to take my unique approach to teaching and write a comprehensive textbook. I felt I had a gift for explaining difficult concepts in understandable terms. I was also inspired by all the knowledgeable and dedicated professionals I met in the field of blood banking. My first book was an opportunity to organize all this knowledge into one usable text.

FAD - What motivates you?

DH - The students and new learners continue to motivate and inspire me to find innovative ways of teaching. I try to instill in students a life-long commitment to learning and to inspire dedication and pride in their work.

FAD - Who or what has influenced you the most in your career?

DH - I am a self-motivated individual who has been influenced by all the dedicated professionals across the country that I have met during my career. I am also influenced and motivated by the many bright minds of my graduate and undergraduate students.

FAD - What has been your most rewarding experience since teaming up with F. A. Davis?

DH - Working with a family-run publishing company who really cares about their authors and supports them in many ways.

& Transfusion Practices,
5th Edition

Denise M. Harmening,
PhD, MT(ASCP), CLS(NCA)

FAD - The fifth edition of Modern Blood Banking & Transfusion Practices, 5th Edition has been very well received in its first year. Tell us a little bit about how you approached this revision and some of the features that make this text so exceptional.

DH - The approach to the fifth edition is the same as previous editions: an attempt to provide a concise and thorough guide to transfusion practices and immunohematology. An approach of the perfect "crossmatch" of theory and practice provides the reader with a working knowledge of modern routine blood banking. Several features of this edition offer great appeal to students and educators: step by step photographs of ABO forward and reverse grouping; a new chapter on molecular biology; outlines; educational objectives; case histories; study guide questions; summary charts; glossary; a blood group antibody characteristic chart provided on the inside covers of the book; and an Instructor's Resource Disk that provides an electronic test bank of questions on CD-ROM.

FAD - Is there anything you find particularly challenging when writing?

DH - Trying to keep up with all the advances in the fields of transfusion medicine, hematology, and laboratory testing is a tremendous challenge for me when writing.

FAD - Where do you hope to take your writing in the future?

DH - In the future, I would like to expand and improve my current publications and venture into new areas of writing.

FAD - What expression or rule of life do you try to live by?

DH - My philosophy is to live by standards and principles, maintain a positive attitude, value family and friends, surround yourself with positive, energetic people, and believe in yourself.
